Biker Bracelets

I came across these bracelets a few years ago, admired them then....and have become obsessed with them today.  They are made from recycled bike tire!!  The designer, Barbi, should be a surgeon because the way she cuts into the rubber to create the curly-swirly designs is amazing! She makes bracelets, necklaces, earrings and face masks!  Not sure when you would need the masks, but hey??!!  It is Portland!

Hot Yoga

I attended a Hot Yoga class today and it was AWESOME!!  I feel revived, relaxed, worked, all great feelings!  My friend asked me what Hot Yoga is.....so here is the deal:
Hot Yoga is simply practicing selected asanas, Yoga postures and poses, in a heated room.
In Hot Yoga, the room temperature is usually kept at 95-100 degrees Fahrenheit while you are maintaining your asanas. A Hot Yoga class usually takes 60, 75 or 90 minutes. Now, the heat helps the body warm up while it relaxes the muscles, increasing its flexibility and preventing injury. The heat also encourages an increase in cardiovascular activity and helps you burn more calories. Also, the temperature allows for you to sweat more thus helping the body to get rid of toxins faster.
I wonder how many calories I burned?  I am definitely having a glass of wine tonight.  Cheers!

Cute Kids Tees

I am sooo over the $24 kids tee, so I was thrilled to come across the Honeybeetees.com line where all the cute kids tees are $16 and under!  The tees are 100% cotton, and pre-shrunk.  They come in cute colors and have a clean, simple style that I really like.  They also make water bottles and sweatshirts too.  Too cute!

Kumkwats

I ate a Kumkwat for the first time in my life and I had to share the experience.
When you bite into the 1-2 inch sized fruit, the sweet outer layer combined with inner fleshy bitterness, tastes like a sweet lemon.  I cant believe I had never tried it before!!
They can be eaten whole (just pop them in your mouth) or can be made into jelly/used for candying, added to tea, used as a garnish for martini's/old fashion's and other cocktails.  In China, the Kumkwat plant, symbolizes good luck.
Found locally at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods...... if your looking for something new to try, and impress the kids....this is your fruit!  Enjoy.

Middle Class Blues

In the April 9th Fortune Magazine, writer, Geoff Colvin, offers his opinion on the Middle Class' problems.  Where do we start, right??
His article, titled "Politicians say they can cure the Middle Class Blues.  Don't Believe Them", he offers an interesting perspective that I wanted to share.  The middle class is where the votes are AND we have been the most hit by the recession and and financial crisis.  Republicans blame Obama for "more spending, more debt, more regulation", Democrats say recession started under Bush, caused by his rich banker friends...lots of pointing fingers but no real solution, right?
The article discusses how both narratives are "irrelevant"!!  Interesting, huh??
I was....
The sorry situation were are in according to Colvin is that THE problem started long before the recession and financial crisis hit.  Incomes in the middle class have gone nowhere for more than 20 years after rising slowly through most of the 20th century.  The economy demands high-level skills from workers and for most of the 20th century, the US kept up.  A brief history, "In 1900 few people stayed in school past 8th grade, by 1970 a large majority finished high school and many went to college.  American workers became the worlds best-educated and earned the rewards.  The in 1970, the American education level stopped rising.  High school graduation peaked at 77% in 1969 and has dropped to 69% today, college rates have dropped too.  The economy keeps demanding more workers with advanced skills but we stopped producing more. Other countries relentlessly educated their people so we fell from #1 in the world to middle of the pack".
We know this already....
BUT, what is interesting is that the Infotech Revolution came along.  This is great for high-wage earners w/ 3 computer screens on desk to multi-task more and embrace the latest technology and this is great for the low wage earners who's job of restaurant cook, waitress, mechanic is unchanged...."but the middle class jobs are disappearing, software is taking over routine back office tasks and info tech coordinates supply chain and manufacturing can be done by lower paid workers abroad".
The problem is not the recession or income inequality...the problem is that the middle class isn't supplying the new skills the world is demanding....
In closing, this is Great news folks!  We can fix that problem....its called an overhaul in our education system...and it has to be done on a State Level (not a federal one)....Presidents cant make much difference in this issue.  But we can.....we have identified the problem, now the future is in our hands.

My turning 40 Revelations

Yup.  It happened, yesterday in fact.  I am now 40 years of age.
I had a wonderful birthday, celebrated with my beautiful family and my most amazing friends.
I feel wonderful and I am ready to embrace another decade.
I had hoped I would feel this way, and was even unsure of it all a few days ago, but I woke up a changed woman.  Sure, I dont have it all figured out...BUT, I am 100% sure of the important things.  The 15 things I have learned so far:
1) I am married to my soul mate
2) My sons and daughter are the best thing I have ever created in my life
3) My parents shaped me, made me and have always been there for me
4) My sister knows me like no one else
5) My friends are supportive, kind, loving and my local family
6) All of the above are healthy!!
7) I too will someday say "the time goes by so fast" wistfully
8) I will never have wash-board abs and I dont really care
9) I wish I had spent more quality time with my grandparents and really learned their "life story" and I will never have that chance
10) Each passing day provides me with the opportunity to explore and wonder
11) I look and feel better now that I will at 50
12) I get to take a 2 week trip alone with my husband this year
13) Complaining about the weather gets you no where
14) Always take time to slow down and smell the roses
15) Hope, Pray, Love, Laugh, Smile often....

New purse

Just bought a new purse in Manzanita yesterday.  Its is a soft, leather gray with neon lime green along the bottom.  So fun for Spring.  The bag has embellished square silver studs on both sides.  The inside is a cute, colorful paisley.  The bag was cheap, $58, made in San Francisco by Tokoyo Bay.  It was especially refreshing to dump my large, oversized purse on the table, weed it out and only place my wallet, keys and sunglasses in my new bag.  As they say, out with the old, in with the new!
