It was within our reach.....

I went to another Portland Public School Laurelhurst PTA meeting last night where we had PPS school boardmember, Pam Knowles and PPS Executive Director of Community Affairs, Robb Cowie, discussed the conditions of our schools and the latest rounds of soon-to-be budget cuts.  I am glad they came to speak with us, however, we are in such a sad, sad state with no real tangible fix in sight.  We were so close to winning the bond, only lost by 548 votes, and now we are back to square one.  The other sad point is that while over 400 families attend Laurelhurst School, only 30 people (a big crowd last night) attend the PTA meetings.   Why dont more parents get involved?  Dont people realize that the more we bond together, the more we can get done?  Why are people to busy to make time for this?  Why isnt education a priority in parents lives? Boo-hoo!!  Boo-hoo!!  Sigh. Sigh.
Newly appointed State Representative Alissa Keny-Guyer, also attended last nights meeting.  She has passion and knowledge for what's going on in the schools and with the new healthcare changes.  I look forward to having her attend a future PTA meeting.  She only spoke for 10 minutes, but it was great to personally meet her and listen to her hopes and plans.  I signed up to attend some of her future "coffee-talks" which should be informative.  If she can be hopeful, I guess I can be too.
