A great read

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Thanks mom for sending me such a good book:)
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by author Rebecca Skloot, is moving story about medicine and family, of how life is sustained in laboratories and in memory.
Henrietta Lacks was a mother of five in Baltimore, a poor African American who died from a cruelly aggressive cancer at the age of 30 in 1951. A sample of her cancerous tissue, taken without her knowledge or consent, as was the custom then, turned out to provide one of the holy grails of mid-century biology: human cells that could survive--AND thrive--in the lab. Known as HeLa cells, their stunning potency gave scientists a building block for countless breakthroughs, beginning with the cure for polio.
Meanwhile, Henrietta's family continued to live in poverty and frequently poor health, and their discovery decades later of her unknowing contribution--and her cells' strange survival--left them full of pride, anger, and suspicion. Skloot slowly gains the trust of the family while helping them learn the truth about Henrietta, and with their aid she tells a rich and haunting story that asks the questions, Who owns our bodies? And who carries our memories?

My son's pinky nail

My 7 year old has a nail infatuation. It's very hard to pin him down to trim his nails, especially his pinky nail. He says it is "his claw". He named it "pocketknife". The picture below shows it to be mid- length but it just broke.
When should I be scared?

Crazy Laces

I am a sneaker gal.  I have many many different types of sneakers (some people call them tennis shoes) to match many different outfit choices.  Do I want to look casual, sporty, athletic, relaxed, wearing out of necessity to chase kids, etc.  Crewcuts, JCrew's kids catalog has been showing lime green laces w/ their kids sneakers which are super cute!
I recently added gray laces (from white ones) to my Converse black sneakers which looks soooo edgy.  I am thinking some pink ones for Spring would be cute.

Check these out!  Lots of choices at http://www.welovecolors.com/gift/shoelaces.asp

Ah-mazing Baby Hat

Oh My God!  These baby hats are too cute.  Found mine at Posh Baby (809 NW 11th, Portland) and I think Sylvia needs another.
Did I mention they are reversible?  2 adorable patterns with a wide brim for summer.

My New Calling....NOT!

I was recently reading Time Magazine (March 21, 2011) and came across a new business opportunity!  I am always looking for that high paying, low hours with lots of flexibility job.  The article, titled "Bugged Out", is about Lice Removal Boutiques.  Yes Lice Removal!  and I could be a Lice-Removal Technician!  I hear my calling.  Seattle's salon, called "Lice Knowing You" (LKY) says business is booming.    Having nit-picked my 7 year old's head a few times already, I appreciate this service.
A Portland store is scheduled for April 2012.

Welcome!

Hi!  Welcome to Breezing Thru My Life, a blog about my life, interests, passions and whims.

After running my first 5K last weekend, the gals and I ended up at Doug Fir for some much needed food and hydration.  After the first or maybe 2nd round of Bloody Mary's, I headed to the ladies room only to be greeted by the most enormous silver plated Moose head.  Ever since then, I have been crazed looking for my own silver moose.  Unfortunately, there isnt a picture of this great moose to share with you but I have found some cool animal head alternatives.

These are cardboard!
